NCC Warns Against Fake Telecom Apps and Scams
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a strong warning to telecom consumers nationwide to be wary of fake mobile applications and online scams disguised as legitimate telecom services. The Commission emphasized that fraudsters are increasingly targeting unsuspecting users through cloned websites, fake data-selling apps, and phishing platforms that mimic trusted telecom brands.
According to the NCC, these fraudulent apps often promise discounted data, airtime, or quick loan services, luring users into providing personal and financial information. Once this data is submitted, scammers exploit it to steal money or conduct unauthorized transactions. The Commission reiterated that legitimate telecom operators and service providers always use verified websites, official app stores, and secure payment gateways.
The NCC’s Director of Consumer Affairs disclosed that the agency has received multiple complaints from citizens who fell victim to fake telecom platforms in recent months. Many of these fraudulent apps use similar logos and names as popular telecom companies, making it difficult for consumers to differentiate between real and fake platforms.
To combat this growing threat, the NCC has partnered with security agencies and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to track and shut down fraudulent websites and apps. Telecom operators have also been instructed to increase public awareness through SMS alerts, social media campaigns, and customer education. These efforts aim to protect Nigerians from losing money to scammers.
The Commission advised users to always download telecom-related apps only from verified sources such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store. It also warned against clicking links shared via unsolicited messages, especially those promising free airtime, data bonuses, or lotteries. Users are urged to double-check the domain name of any telecom website before entering sensitive details like passwords or bank information.
In addition, NCC stressed the importance of reporting suspicious activities. Victims or potential victims are encouraged to reach out via NCC’s toll-free number (622) or email the Commission’s consumer protection unit. Prompt reporting helps authorities track fraud patterns and take action against cybercriminals more effectively.
The rise of digital scams highlights the need for stronger cybersecurity awareness in Nigeria’s growing telecom sector. With millions of users relying on mobile apps for data purchases, bill payments, and communication, protecting personal information has become more critical than ever. The NCC continues to work toward safer online experiences for telecom consumers across the country.
This latest warning aligns with the Commission’s broader mission to safeguard consumer rights and promote trust in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. By staying alert and informed, Nigerians can help the NCC reduce the spread of fraudulent telecom apps and online scams.
As Nigeria embraces digital transformation and mobile innovation, public vigilance remains essential. The NCC’s message is clear: always verify before you transact. Staying cautious today could save you from major financial losses tomorrow.
